SUMMARY:Beauty of Gold and Silver Leaves in Japanese Painting (Nihonga)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nGold and silver leaf applications are used as a background in many Japanese traditional paintings. However\, Japanese modern and contemporary artists have been using gold and silver leaves as the main materials for their abstract paintings. Mami Takahashi will show how to apply a flat leaf onto a paper surface\, as well as how to sprinkle gold leaf. Takahashi will also show the magic of silver leaf by the process of oxidation. \nAbout the Speaker\n\nMami Takahashi is a Japanese multidisciplinary artist who works in the US. She received her MFA in Contemporary Studio Practice from Portland State University (Portland\, OR)\, and earned a BFA in Japanese Painting from Joshibi University of Art and Design (Japan). She was a research scholar at the University of Oregon\, focusing on the conceptual understanding of Japanese aesthetics. Takahashi is currently a visiting artist at the Japanese Arts Foundation. Her current exhibition “Kintsugi: Healing through Japanese Art” is presented at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago through early March 2023. Her artwork also has been collected and exhibited internationally. \nSpecial thanks to our co-organizer: \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:"Oishisou!" Anime Sweets Book Talk & Demo
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nJoin food stylist and cookbook author Hadley Sui in conversation with illustrator Monique Narboneta Zosa as they discuss their book “Oishisou!! The Ultimate Anime Dessert Cookbook\,” published in June of this year. Featuring over 60 desserts and confections drawn from Japanese animation\, the book celebrates food and anime\, two gateways to learning about Japanese culture. \nHadley will discuss her pastry background and path to Japanese pastries\, as well as her experience creating the book. Monique will share her creative process behind the book’s vibrant and captivating images. Then\, Hadley will lead a live demo of two recipes from the book\, followed by a Q&A. \nAttendees will receive a copy of all demo recipes after the event. \nCLICK HERE to order a copy of “Oishisou!! The Ultimate Anime Dessert Cookbook.” \nAbout the Speakers\nHadley Sui is a Brooklyn-based food stylist\, pastry chef\, and recipe developer. A gap year spent living with host families and attending high school in Yoshikawa\, Japan\, resulted in a lifelong love of Japanese culture and prompted her to earn a degree in international studies from the University of Chicago as well as a certificate from that city’s French Pastry School. Her pastry brand\, Hadley Go Lucky\, has been featured in pop-ups throughout New York City\, and she has also appeared as a guest chef for the Japan Arts Foundation’s Tokyo House Party program. Oishisou!! The Ultimate Anime Dessert Cookbook represents the culmination of Hadley’s favorite pastry recipes inspired by both anime and her own experiences in Japan. When outside of the kitchen\, Hadley can be found going on hikes with her husband Jackson and pet shiba Yatsuhashi (named after one of Kyoto’s specialty pastries)\, getting lost in a book\, or hunting for treasures at the Union Square Greenmarket.
