DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nA new twist on an old favorite! The JETAA Chicago and Japan America Society of Chicago YPC Book Club continue this October!\nJoin us for our next meeting on Tuesday\, October 18th\, with a few special guests!\nOur book club will focus on highlighting voices and stories with a strong connection to Japan. For our next meeting\, we have chosen Clark and Division. Written by Naomi Hirohara\, set on the northside of Chicago in 1944\, the story follows a young woman searching for the truth about her revered older sister’s death\, bringing to focus the struggles of one Japanese American family released from mass incarceration at Manzanar during World War II. \nThanks to the efforts of the JASC\, our discussion will be joined by representatives from the Arlington Heights Memorial Library and organizers of the One Book One Village initiative\,  Catalina Shin and Neal Parker. SUMMARY:Issey Miyake: Poems of Cloth + Stone
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIn March 1992 Miyake was quoted in the International Herald Tribune as saying “Design is not for philosophy – it’s for life”. From a young age\, Miyake respected artist Isamu Noguchi\, whose novelty inspired Miyake. He was also inspired by fashion designer Madeleine Vionnet’s use of geometric calculations and a “single piece of beautiful cloth”. In Paris\, he visited several museums and he mentioned that he was infuenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi\, and Alberto Giacometti. In the late 1980’s\, he began to experiment with new methods of pleating that would allow both flexibility of movement for the wearer. The fabric’s ‘memory’ holds the pleats. \nIn the 1990’s\, Miyake collaborated with artists for his Guest Artist series; collage maker Yasumasa Morimura\, Nobuyoshi Araki\, Tim Hawkinson and Cai Guo-Qiang \nAbout the Speaker\nGillion Carrara for CS Magazine at the Arts Club in Chicago \nGillion Carrara has been teaching in both Departments of Fashion Design and Art History since 1977. Her topics focus on fashion and dress from 1860 to the present.
