SUMMARY:Journey to Kyushu: Kagoshima
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWith its active volcanoes\, natural hot springs\, oceans and islands\, Kagoshima Prefecture is the place to feel the power of the earth. Kagoshima is located in the southernmost part of the four main Japanese islands and is a warm place blessed with awesome foods\, nature\, diverse cultures\, and history. In this talk session\, 3 presenters living in Kagoshima will talk about the unique lifestyles of people in Kagoshima and the surprising cultures and nature of Kagoshima’s islands \nAbout the Speakers\nWong Yimin is a Coordinator of International Resources (CIR) who hails from the sunny island of Singapore. She came to Kagoshima in October 2021\, and has been working under Kagoshima Prefectural Office’s International Affairs Division with a job scope ranging from translation\, events\, to matters related to international relations. When not busy at work\, she dabbles in photography and enjoys capturing the beauty of Kagoshima through her lens. Although she is still relatively new to Kagoshima\, she is looking forward to sharing the wonders of this prefecture to everyone. \nJoseph Snowden is a British Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) with the Kagoshima Prefectural Government’s International Affairs Division. Graduating from the University of Cambridge in 2017 with a BA in Natural Sciences\, he became interested in international exchange while working with people from all over the world as a research scientist at the University of Leeds. He began his post as CIR in Kagoshima in August 2022\, following the completion of his PhD. While still new to Kagoshima\, he is already enamored with the region and excited to share his experience so far. \nNaoki Taruno is working for the tourism division of Kagoshima Prefectural Government. He had been working for the Tokyo Headquarters of the Development Bank of Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for 12 years in total. Now he has come back to his hometown of Kagoshima in 2021. He has visited the U.S. many times for volunteer projects to support critically ill children\, and studied at the University of Michigan in 2005. A holder of three sake certifications\, she is the co-author of Exploring the World of Japanese Craft Sake: Rice Water Earth (Tuttle Publishing\, 2022) and the editor of the forthcoming English-language translation of a book of Japanese tanka poetry\, By the Shore of Lake Michigan (UCLA Asian American Studies Press). She has been a contributor to The Wall Street Journal\, Time\, Newsweek\, TheAtlantic.com\, People\, Food & Wine\, Saveur\, The Los Angeles Times\, and NPR\, among other publications. \n  \n  \n  \nMichael Tremblay is currently the Beverage Director for Toronto’s Ki Modern Japanese + Bar\, where he manages an award-winning wine and sake list\, including the largest sake program in Canada. He is dedicated to being Ki’s ambassador for sake\, educating guests and staff alike in the beauty and subtle art of sake\, wine and food. Michael is a certified WSET sake and wine instructor for the Independent Wine Education Guild\, a Senior Sake judge for the International Wine Challenge\, held in London and Japan\, and the U.S. National Sake Appraisal half in Hawaii. In October 2018 Michael was inducted as a Sake Samurai at the Matsuo Taisha Shrine in Kyoto\, a 1300-year old shrine to sake. This is a distinction held by only 70 people at that time. He is the founder of the Sake Scholar Course\, a advanced certification that explores the many sake regions of Japan. SUMMARY:Beauty of Gold and Silver Leaves in Japanese Painting (Nihonga)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nGold and silver leaf applications are used as a background in many Japanese traditional paintings. However\, Japanese modern and contemporary artists have been using gold and silver leaves as the main materials for their abstract paintings. Mami Takahashi will show how to apply a flat leaf onto a paper surface\, as well as how to sprinkle gold leaf. Takahashi will also show the magic of silver leaf by the process of oxidation. \nAbout the Speaker\n\nMami Takahashi is a Japanese multidisciplinary artist who works in the US. She received her MFA in Contemporary Studio Practice from Portland State University (Portland\, OR)\, and earned a BFA in Japanese Painting from Joshibi University of Art and Design (Japan). She was a research scholar at the University of Oregon\, focusing on the conceptual understanding of Japanese aesthetics. Takahashi is currently a visiting artist at the Japanese Arts Foundation. Her current exhibition “Kintsugi: Healing through Japanese Art” is presented at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago through early March 2023. SUMMARY:Issey Miyake: Poems of Cloth + Stone
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIn March 1992 Miyake was quoted in the International Herald Tribune as saying “Design is not for philosophy – it’s for life”. From a young age\, Miyake respected artist Isamu Noguchi\, whose novelty inspired Miyake. He was also inspired by fashion designer Madeleine Vionnet’s use of geometric calculations and a “single piece of beautiful cloth”. In Paris\, he visited several museums and he mentioned that he was infuenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi\, and Alberto Giacometti. In the late 1980’s\, he began to experiment with new methods of pleating that would allow both flexibility of movement for the wearer. The fabric’s ‘memory’ holds the pleats. \nIn the 1990’s\, Miyake collaborated with artists for his Guest Artist series; collage maker Yasumasa Morimura\, Nobuyoshi Araki\, Tim Hawkinson and Cai Guo-Qiang \nAbout the Speaker\nGillion Carrara for CS Magazine at the Arts Club in Chicago \nGillion Carrara has been teaching in both Departments of Fashion Design and Art History since 1977. Her topics focus on fashion and dress from 1860 to the present. She will talk about how she became where she is today\, how she promotes Japanese home cooking\, how she has built a community with her fans and her goals for the future. \nAbout the Speaker\nMoe spent her teenage years as a Geisha in Gion\, Kyoto. After that\, she worked and gained experience in various professions. She started her YouTube channel called Kimono Mom in 2020\, showcasing the unique intersections of her identity and interests – kimono and cooking. What first started as a way to overcome her postpartum depression by connecting with others online\, she gained over a million followers from 192 countries within two years. She and her husband founded ForSmiles to introduce Japanese home cooking and culture to an international audience and provide an environment where people outside of Japan can easily access Japanese cooking tools\, sauces\, spices\, etc.

Currently\, she is Director of International Tourism at the Office of Tourism and Promotion. In her past positions\, she has worked in welfare\, attracting enterprises\, public relations\, and international affairs\, and has also completed a dispatch assignment at the Foreign Ministry where she spent time at both the Ministry and the Japanese consulate in Miami\, Florida. In the three years following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami\, she worked at the prefectural branch office on the coast where she worked in support of the prefecture’s reconstruction efforts. \nDevan Veres is a JET Program Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) who works at the Iwate Prefectural Government Office of International Affairs. He grew up in Vancouver Canada and graduated from the University of British Columbia with a major in Japanese language and culture. While it is still Devan’s first year working here in Iwate\, he is looking forward to sharing all of the things he has learned about the prefecture since arriving here in October 2021. \nAya Yokosawa has started working for the Promotion and Tourism Division of Iwate Prefectural Government Office as a staff member this April. She grew up near a beautiful coastal area in southern Iwate Prefecture and studied German history and language at the University of Osaka. She had previously worked in the chemical industry as a chief coordinator of international logistics for nearly 7 years. In this seminar\, we will introduce the popular spots of Yamagata prefecture\, Dewasanzan\, and Yamadera from three speakers. \nAbout the Speakers\nAtsumi Ogata is a member of the Tourism Division at the Yamagata Prefectural Government. She was born in Beijing\, China where she lived until she was 10 years old. After graduating from a university in Japan\, majoring in international and regional studies\, Ms. Ogata studied in Canada and obtained a second degree in international exchange and regional tourism promotions. After returning to Japan\, she currently serves as a staff member at the Yamagata Prefectural Government\, where she tells the word about the fascination and attractiveness of the Yamagata Prefecture. \n\n \nKanako Takahashi is an English to Japanese media translator\, an amateur rakugo performer\, and a member of Yamaderans\, a group of Yamadera-loving English guides. She was born in Long Island\, New York\, and spent most of her early childhood there. After moving to Yokohama\, Japan\, she studied English literature at Aoyama Gakuin University and was an exchange student at the University of Washington. She currently resides in Yamagata City\, where she constantly hunts for beautiful scenery\, delicious cuisine\, and great company. \n \nSara Millot-Ito lives in Tsuruoka City\, Yamagata Prefecture\, since 2017. After graduating from Toulouse II University in Japanese Studies\, Sara decided to work at Tsuruoka City Hall as a Coordinator for International Relations within the JET Programme. She originally planned to stay only two years in Yamagata Prefecture\, knowing nothing about the region; she thought she’d had seen it all. After learning about the Dewa Sanzan’s sacred mountains\, the UNESCO Creative Gastronomy network\, and the Japanese mummies called “sokushinbutsu\,” Sara realized the uniqueness and beauty of Yamagata Prefecture. DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nOne man’s courage offers timeless lessons for us all. In this presentation\, Adam Schrager tells the story of Ralph Carr\, who was drafted to run for governor of Colorado in 1938\, turned down the chance to run as a vice presidential candidate in 1940\, and was being discussed as a “future presidential candidate” by newspapers in New York\, Chicago and Los Angeles. Carr became a national figure when\, after Pearl Harbor\, he defended the constitutional rights of Japanese-Americans and stood against internment. His outspoken and unpopular stance would cost him greatly\, both personally and professionally \nAbout the Speaker\n \nAdam Schrager is the Social Impact Storyteller at the American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact. He also teaches journalism at UW-Madison. He worked as a broadcast journalist for nearly 30 years winning more than two dozen Emmy Awards in the process. \nHe’s the author of four books\, including “The Principled Politician\,” which led to Colorado lawmakers naming the state’s new justice center and a state highway after its subject\, former Gov. All those affected will always remain foremost in our thoughts and prayers. \nAbout the Speaker\n \nLeroy (Andy) L. Anderson\, III served as President and Treasurer of the Board of Millwood School\, and has been a board member of the Manchester YMCA since the mid-90s where he sponsored the Pella Virginia Skate Park\, The Anderson Family Welcome Center in Honor of Taylor Anderson and chaired Annual Giving and capital campaigns. He also serves as Treasurer of the Japan Virginia Society and is Co-Chair with Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki of the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund. \nTaylor was a JET (Japan Exchange Teaching) Programme teacher when she perished in the March\, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund was founded in Taylor’s honor by Andy\, Jean\, Julia and Jeff with the help of Taylor’s high school alma mater\, St. Catherine’s School. The fund\, with the advent of Toho-Towa’s promotion of the film (www.thetaylorandersonstory.com) registered as a Japanese NPO (www.tamf.jp). The initial board meeting of the fund was in December\, 2013 in Tokyo \nThe purpose of the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund is to help students\, schools and families in the Ishinomaki area recover from the earthquake and tsunami as Taylor’s family and the board of director’s expects Taylor would have wanted and to pursue Taylor’s dream of being a bridge between the U.S. and Japan. Dr. Lincoln will explore the population trends and their implications for companies like Omron. \nAbout the Speaker\nNigel Blakeway currently holds titles as Chairman & CEO\, OMRON Management Center of America\, Inc.; Managing Executive Officer\, OMRON Corporation\, Kyoto HQ; Chairman\, OMRON Management Center of Europe and Chairman\, OMRON Management Center of Asia Pacific. Mr. Blakeway previously worked for 12 years at Panasonic in Japan\, responsible for “Global Customers” and as EU General Manager. \nEdward J. Lincoln is an adjunct professor at Columbia University\, where he teaches a course on the Japanese economy. In addition\, he is a professorial lecturer at George Washington University\, where he teaches a course on East Asian economies. At Columbia\, Professor Lincoln is also a Research Associate of the Center for the Japanese Economy and Business. From 2006 to 2011\, he was director of the Center for Japan-U.S. Business and Economic Studies and professor of economics at the Stern School of Business\, New York University. Professor Lincoln’s research interests include contemporary structure and change in the Japanese economy\, East Asian economic integration\, and U.S. economic policy toward Japan and East Asia. He is the author of nine books and monographs\, including Winners Without Losers: Why Americans Should Care More About Global Economic Policy (Cornell University Press\, 2007)\, East Asian Economic Regionalism (The Council on Foreign Relations and the Brookings Institution\, 2004)\, Arthritic Japan: The Slow Pace of Economic Reform (Brookings\, 2001)\, and Troubled Times: U.S.-Japan Economic Relations in the 1990s (Brookings\, 1998). An earlier book\, Japan Facing Economic Maturity (Brookings\, 1988) received the Masayoshi Ohira Award for outstanding books on the Asia-Pacific region. \nEarlier in his career\, Professor Lincoln was a senior fellow at both the Brookings Institution (1984-1993 and 1996-2001) and the Council on Foreign Relations (2002-2006). Japan is also under North Korea’s nucelar threat. Furthermore\, the risk of conflict between the US and China seems to be rising gradually in Taiwan Strait. What kind of geo-strategy is Japan trying to adopt to survive such a difficult environment? While looking at the policies of the Kishida administration\, this session will analyze the future course of Japan. \nEmma Chanlett-Avery\, Specialist in Asian Affairs\, Congressional Research Service \n“The U.S.-Japan Alliance: the View from Washington” \nEmma Chanlett-Avery will present a perspective on the U.S.-Japan alliance from Washington\, D.C. How has the Biden Administration prioritized the U.S.-Japan alliance? How does the alliance fit within the recently-released Indo-Pacific strategy? Touching on both congressional and executive branch perspectives\, Ms. Chanlett-Avery will address the centrality of the U.S.-Japan alliance\, the growing network of other security partnerships such as the Quad\, and how Washington and Tokyo coordinate their approach to regional challenges. What are the areas of tension in the alliance? Will Japan’s upcoming release of its National Security Strategy align with U.S. policy? To what extent is Japan developing a more autonomous approach to its own defense? \nAbout the Speakers\nHiroyuki Akita is a Commentator of Nikkei. He regularly writes commentaries and columns\, analysis mainly on foreign & international security affairs. He joined Nikkei in 1987 and worked at Political News Dept.(98-2002) where he covered Japanese foreign & security policies\, domestic politics. He was Senior & Editorial Staff Writer (2009-17) \, and he also worked at “Leader Writing Team ” of the Financial Times in London (Oct-Dec\, 17). He was Beijing Correspondent (94-98) and Washington Chief Correspondent (2002-06). In Beijing\, he reported major news events such as death of Deng Xiaoping\, Hong Kong handover to China. In Washington DC\, he covered White House & Pentagon\, State Department during Bush administration. He graduated from Jiyu Gakuen College in 1987 and Boston University (M.A.). From 2006 to 07\, he was an associate of US-Japan Program at Harvard University\, where he conducted a research on US-China-Japan relations. In March 2019\, he won the Vaughn-Ueda International Journalist Award\, a prize for outstanding reporting of international affairs. He is an author of two books in Japanese: “Anryu (Power Game of US-China-Japan)”(2008)\, “Ranryu (Strategic Competition of US-Japan and China)”(2016). \nEmma Chanlett-Avery is a Specialist in Asian Affairs at the Congressional Research Service. She focuses on U.S. relations with Japan\, the Korean Peninsula\, Thailand\, and Singapore\, with an emphasis on security issues and alliances. Ms. Chanlett-Avery joined CRS in 2003 through the Presidential Management Fellowship\, with rotations in the State Department on the Korea Desk and at the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group in Bangkok\, Thailand. She also worked in the Office of Policy Planning as a Harold Rosenthal Fellow. She is Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Association of Japan America Societies\, a member of the Mansfield Foundation U.S. – Japan Network for the Future\, Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Japan America Society of Washington\, and the 2016 recipient of the Kato Prize.
