SUMMARY:Japan's Commercial Monsters
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIs Godzilla a yōkai? What about Pikachu? And is Hello Kitty even a monster? \nThis talk will explore how the “commercial monsters” created by Japanese corporations since World War II fit within Japan’s rich heritage of folkloric creatures and spirits. Focusing on the kaijū of Japanese cinema\, the ubiquitous cute characters of Sanrio\, and the games in the Pokémon media franchise\, this lighthearted but substantive presentation will reflect on the many ways in which Godzilla\, Hello Kitty\, and Nintendo’s “pocket monsters” might be considered modern-day yōkai. \nAbout the Speaker\nBill Tsutsui has served as Chancellor and Professor of History at Ottawa University since 2021\, after more than 30 years teaching modern Japanese history and holding a variety of administrative positions at the University of Kansas\, Southern Methodist University\, Hendrix College\, and Harvard University. Among the eight books he has written or edited are Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters (called a “cult classic” by the New York Times) and Japanese Popular Culture and Globalization. He continues to speak\, write\, and teach on the Godzilla movies\, monster culture in Japan\, and the environmental history of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.

His purview encompasses The Izakaya\, Momotaro’s basement level bar and restaurant\, reminiscent of the Yokocho street scene of Tokyo\, which was added to Chicago’s Michelin Guide in 2023. Gene debuted his latest restaurant in Lakeview’s Southport Corridor neighborhood this Spring. Itoko\, which translates to “cousin” in Japanese\, is inspired by its sister concepts in Fulton Market\, and highlights Gene’s passion for traditional sushi and robata dishes. \nSpecial thanks to our sake sponsor:

SUMMARY:Ms. Taft Plants a Tree: How the Cherry Blossoms Came to Washington
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWe’ve all heard the story about how the Japanese cherry blossoms came to Washington. “In 1912 the Mayor of Tokyo\, Yukio Ozaki\, in a gesture of friendship\, gave 3\,000 Japanese cherry trees to Washington.” End of story. But the real story is a lot more complicated — and a lot more interesting. It involves some very fascinating people\, whose lives and interests all connected. Working together\, just five Japanese and Americans\, they brought the trees to our Nation’s Capital to create one of the most famous sites in the world. \nAmbassador John R. Malott\, who served as President of the Japan-America Society of Washington DC for 12 years\, told the story in his book\, Mrs. Taft Plants a Tree: How the Cherry Blossoms Came to Washington. Join us on June 25 as Amb. Malott tells the story to JASC members. Born in Kankakee\, raised in Manteno\, and educated at Northwestern\, Amb. Malott recently moved to Oak Park and joined our Society. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador John R. Malott’s career in the US Foreign Service and as a non-profit leader focused on Asia and in particular Japan. During his 31-years in the US Department of State\, he served as US Ambassador to Malaysia; Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs: US Consul General in Osaka; Director of the Office of Japanese Affairs in Washington; economic officer at the US Embassy in Tokyo; US Consul in Kobe\, Japan; Deputy US Consul General in Mumbai\, India; and civilian advisor to the US Army in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. \nAfter retirement from the State Department\, Amb. Malott served for twelve years as President of the Japan-America Society of Washington DC. In 2017 the Emperor of Japan awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun with Gold Rays and Neck Ribbon for his lifelong contribution to the US-Japan relations. A native of Manteno\, Illinois and a graduate of Northwestern\, he now lives in Oak Park.

SUMMARY:Okonomiyaki Dinner with Chef Paul Virant
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nEnjoy a reception + three-course family-style menu (marinated beef ribs\, veggie yakisoba\, Osaka and Hiroshima syle okonomiyaki & kakigori) at Gaijin restaurant with an introduction by Jean Banchet Chef of the Year winner Paul Virant. \nPlease note that all reservation(s) are non-refundable. \nAbout the Speaker\nChef Paul Virant has long been an innovative force in Chicago’s local food movement. After honing his skills at March in New York\, under Wayne Nish and Hilary Gregg\, Chef Virant joined Chicago’s culinary scene\, working at restaurants such as Charlie Trotter’s\, Ambria\, Blackbird\, and Everest. In 2004\, he opened Vie in Western Springs. With a focus on home-made pickles and preserves\, Chef Virant’s contemporary American cuisine at Vie garnered regional and national attention\, including a three-star review by Phil Vettel of the Chicago Tribune and a Michelin star. In 2011\, he became partner and exectuive chef at Perennial Virant and helped open the J. Parker the following year. Chef Virant opened Vistro (now Vistro Prime) in Hinsdale several years later. In 2019\, Chef Virant opened Gaijin in the West Loop\, an okonomiyaki restaurant he describes as a love letter to his wife Jennifer and their family tradition of making okonomiyaki. A self-described gaijin\, or “outsider”\, Virant playfully embraces this perspective and honors traditional preparations and techniques\, as well as his well-known passion for pickling and preserving.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tour of the Exhibition Meiji Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe latter half of the 19th century was a time of political upheaval\, imperial expansion\, economic transformation and social unrest worldwide. Japan saw the fall of the shogun’s government and the creation of a new\, modern monarchy under the Emperor Meiji (1868-1912). This presentation examines the art of this era as presented in an exciting exhibition currently on view at the Smart Museum of Art\, University of Chicago (through June 9\, 2024). Meiji Modern examines how time-honored artistic motifs such as the sea\, nature\, and supernatural beings were transformed with the introduction of new techniques\, materials\, and audiences. \nCLICK HERE for information on how you can view the exhibit at the Smart Museum of Art through June 9 \nAbout the Speaker\nChelsea Foxwell is Associate Professor of Art History\, East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, and the College at the University of Chicago and co-curator of Meiji Modern. Dr. Foxwell’s scholarship ranges from medieval through modern periods of Japanese art with special emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. She is the author of Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting: Kano Hōgai and the Search for Images (2015). In 2012 she co-curated the exhibition Awash in Color: French and Japanese Prints with Anne Leonard at the Smart Museum of Art. Her recent research includes essays on Kitao Masayoshi (Kuwagata Keisai)\, Edo-period printed painting manuals (gafu)\, and Meiji photography.

SUMMARY:More Japan for Less
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThis program will share highlights of the author’s book\, “More Japan for Less.” He will dispel the misconception that a trip to Japan has to be excessively costly or limited to group tours. Morrie will provide essential information for travelers to plan a unique journey through Japan without breaking the bank. While the primary focus is on leisure travelers\, business travelers can maximize their time in Japan with valuable insights into Japanese culture and etiquette. \nAuthored by Morrie Goldman\, and edited by Leslee Goldman\, the couple crafted More Japan for Less as a “guidance” book with knowledge drawn from their travels and research over the past 30 years. Its narrative approach is more user-friendly than a conventional encyclopedic guidebook format. Following the book’s structure\, Morrie will guide attendees on a lively journey\, offering information and practical tips for first-time or repeat visitors. Even seasoned travelers are likely to discover some intriguing insights. \nMorrie will discuss trip planning\, strategies to reduce travel costs\, the best and worst times to visit\, and insider tips on traveling like a local\, and cultural advice. He will delve into accommodation options in detail\, providing tips on where to save and what’s worth a splurge. For transportation within Japan\, he will discuss whether the Japan Rail Pass is still valuable\, as well as regional transportation options. \nThe formal presentation will conclude with a list of 22 essential tips to get the most out of a leisure visit to Japan. \nThose interested in the “More Japan for Less.” book can either go to MoreJapanForLess.com (where there is a link to Amazon) or you can go to Amazon.com. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\nMorrie is a long-time Japanophile with interests ranging from art and culture to technology. By profession\, he is a business-to-business marketing consultant and writer\, working mostly with technology-related clients\, including Japanese companies and organizations. He is a past vice president and board member of the Japan America Society of Chicago and has written speeches for the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) on Japan-US business relations. Morrie has a travel-level proficiency of the Japanese language and has familiarity with Japanese business customs.

SUMMARY:What Japanese Baseball Brings to the World
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nJapan’s baseball and its culture\, because of its existence outside of MLB’s mainstream\, is a huge potential source of innovation and evolution for the baseball world. \nThings being done differently in Japan\, and thought of differently\, creates the opportunity for people to ask the vital question\, “Why do we do it like this when they do it like that?” – a question any baseball establishment\, whether it’s in Japan or MLB\, absolutely hates to hear\, because they are closed systems organized around doctrines considered to be the pinnacle of baseball knowledge. \nNippon Professional Baseball’s independence creates the possibility that it could surpass MLB as home of the world’s highest quality baseball\, but that won’t happen until Japan’s owners reflect on the inherent strength of their position and set the highest goals for themselves in the same way Samurai Japan has done. \nAbout the Speaker\nA native of the San Francisco Bay Area\, I fell in love with America’s Giants\, and after graduating with a history degree specializing in Japan from the University of California Santa Cruz\, I found a job in Japan to see what I could learn firsthand. \nWhat I learned was baseball\, starting from the vastly more intricate and detailed statistical reports of every day’s pro games and eventually writing about it\, publishing the English languages first analytical guides to Japanese pro ball from 1994 to 1997 – work that led to my being hired by the English language newspaper\, “The Daily Yomiuri” in 1998. \nSince 2012\, I moved to one of Japan’s two national press agencies\, “Kyodo News\,” where I expect to work until I reach mandatory retirement age ahead of the 2025 season. \nThrough it all\, I have tried to make sense of how and why things are done here\, in MLB and in other countries\, and try to understand individuals’ stories within those contexts.

SUMMARY:Tour of Radical Clay with Exhibition Curator\, Janice Katz
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nJoin Janice Katz as she guides us through the exhibition of contemporary Japanese ceramics by thirty-six women artists. As a group\, these artists are far less interested in and bound by tradition than many contemporary ceramicists at work in Japan. This ability to innovate\, to invent new ways of working with clay and glaze\, and the skill of each artist to carve out their own style and pioneering technique\, is what makes these works both awe-inspiring and unusual. \nAbout the Speaker\nJanice Katz is the Roger L. Weston Associate Curator of Japanese Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. She has been with the museum for over 20 years where she curates quarterly exhibitions of Japanese prints. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2004. Her research focuses on paintings from the Edo period (1615-1868) and the history of art collecting in Japan. Her publications include Japanese Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum\, Oxford (2003)\, and Beyond Golden Clouds: Japanese Screens from the Art Institute of Chicago and the Saint Louis Art Museum (2009)\, an exhibition which traveled from Chicago to St. Louis and San Francisco. Her 2018 exhibition at the Art Institute\, Painting the Floating World: Ukiyo-e Masterpieces from the Weston Collection\, and its accompanying catalogue\, focused on ukiyo-e paintings of the 17th through 20th centuries.
