She started her YouTube channel called Kimono Mom in 2020\, showcasing the unique intersections of her identity and interests – kimono and cooking. What first started as a way to overcome her postpartum depression by connecting with others online\, she gained over a million followers from 192 countries within two years. She and her husband founded ForSmiles to introduce Japanese home cooking and culture to an international audience and provide an environment where people outside of Japan can easily access Japanese cooking tools\, sauces\, spices\, etc.

Since 1989\, Tim has worked and studied at Anderson Japanese Gardens under the direction of Mr. Hoichi Kurisu\, of Kurisu International\, where he is currently Garden Curator. Tim is a frequent contributor to Sukiya Living Magazine and has presented at national and regional conferences for the North American Japanese Garden Association\, of which he is a past member of the board of directors. \nIn 2001 Tim completed the Kyoto University of Art and Design two-week intensive garden symposium in Kyoto\, Japan. Iwate’s fascinating wilderness\, history\, traditional culture\, and delicious food await! \nAbout the Speaker\n \nReiko Kitatochi has been working for the Iwate Prefectural Government for over 25 years. Currently\, she is Director of International Tourism at the Office of Tourism and Promotion. In her past positions\, she has worked in welfare\, attracting enterprises\, public relations\, and international affairs\, and has also completed a dispatch assignment at the Foreign Ministry where she spent time at both the Ministry and the Japanese consulate in Miami\, Florida. In the three years following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami\, she worked at the prefectural branch office on the coast where she worked in support of the prefecture’s reconstruction efforts. \nDevan Veres is a JET Program Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) who works at the Iwate Prefectural Government Office of International Affairs. He grew up in Vancouver Canada and graduated from the University of British Columbia with a major in Japanese language and culture. While it is still Devan’s first year working here in Iwate\, he is looking forward to sharing all of the things he has learned about the prefecture since arriving here in October 2021. \nAya Yokosawa has started working for the Promotion and Tourism Division of Iwate Prefectural Government Office as a staff member this April. She grew up near a beautiful coastal area in southern Iwate Prefecture and studied German history and language at the University of Osaka. She had previously worked in the chemical industry as a chief coordinator of international logistics for nearly 7 years. There are many attractive sightseeing destinations such as “Dewasanzan” the three sacred mountains known for its Journey of Rebirth\,“Yamadera” the place of worship\, and “Ginzan Onsen” the hot springs with a fascinating view that makes you feel as if you have traveled back in time. In this seminar\, we will introduce the popular spots of Yamagata prefecture\, Dewasanzan\, and Yamadera from three speakers. \nAbout the Speakers\nAtsumi Ogata is a member of the Tourism Division at the Yamagata Prefectural Government. She was born in Beijing\, China where she lived until she was 10 years old. After graduating from a university in Japan\, majoring in international and regional studies\, Ms. Ogata studied in Canada and obtained a second degree in international exchange and regional tourism promotions. After returning to Japan\, she currently serves as a staff member at the Yamagata Prefectural Government\, where she tells the word about the fascination and attractiveness of the Yamagata Prefecture. \n\n \nKanako Takahashi is an English to Japanese media translator\, an amateur rakugo performer\, and a member of Yamaderans\, a group of Yamadera-loving English guides. She was born in Long Island\, New York\, and spent most of her early childhood there. After moving to Yokohama\, Japan\, she studied English literature at Aoyama Gakuin University and was an exchange student at the University of Washington. She currently resides in Yamagata City\, where she constantly hunts for beautiful scenery\, delicious cuisine\, and great company. \n \nSara Millot-Ito lives in Tsuruoka City\, Yamagata Prefecture\, since 2017. After graduating from Toulouse II University in Japanese Studies\, Sara decided to work at Tsuruoka City Hall as a Coordinator for International Relations within the JET Programme. She originally planned to stay only two years in Yamagata Prefecture\, knowing nothing about the region; she thought she’d had seen it all. He also teaches journalism at UW-Madison. He worked as a broadcast journalist for nearly 30 years winning more than two dozen Emmy Awards in the process. \nHe’s the author of four books\, including “The Principled Politician\,” which led to Colorado lawmakers naming the state’s new justice center and a state highway after its subject\, former Gov. All those affected will always remain foremost in our thoughts and prayers. \nAbout the Speaker\n \nLeroy (Andy) L. Anderson\, III served as President and Treasurer of the Board of Millwood School\, and has been a board member of the Manchester YMCA since the mid-90s where he sponsored the Pella Virginia Skate Park\, The Anderson Family Welcome Center in Honor of Taylor Anderson and chaired Annual Giving and capital campaigns. He also serves as Treasurer of the Japan Virginia Society and is Co-Chair with Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki of the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund. \nTaylor was a JET (Japan Exchange Teaching) Programme teacher when she perished in the March\, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund was founded in Taylor’s honor by Andy\, Jean\, Julia and Jeff with the help of Taylor’s high school alma mater\, St. Catherine’s School. The fund\, with the advent of Toho-Towa’s promotion of the film (www.thetaylorandersonstory.com) registered as a Japanese NPO (www.tamf.jp). The initial board meeting of the fund was in December\, 2013 in Tokyo \nThe purpose of the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund is to help students\, schools and families in the Ishinomaki area recover from the earthquake and tsunami as Taylor’s family and the board of director’s expects Taylor would have wanted and to pursue Taylor’s dream of being a bridge between the U.S. and Japan. Lincoln is an adjunct professor at Columbia University\, where he teaches a course on the Japanese economy. In addition\, he is a professorial lecturer at George Washington University\, where he teaches a course on East Asian economies. From 2006 to 2011\, he was director of the Center for Japan-U.S. Business and Economic Studies and professor of economics at the Stern School of Business\, New York University. Professor Lincoln’s research interests include contemporary structure and change in the Japanese economy\, East Asian economic integration\, and U.S. economic policy toward Japan and East Asia. He is the author of nine books and monographs\, including Winners Without Losers: Why Americans Should Care More About Global Economic Policy (Cornell University Press\, 2007)\, East Asian Economic Regionalism (The Council on Foreign Relations and the Brookings Institution\, 2004)\, Arthritic Japan: The Slow Pace of Economic Reform (Brookings\, 2001)\, and Troubled Times: U.S.-Japan Economic Relations in the 1990s (Brookings\, 1998). An earlier book\, Japan Facing Economic Maturity (Brookings\, 1988) received the Masayoshi Ohira Award for outstanding books on the Asia-Pacific region. \nEarlier in his career\, Professor Lincoln was a senior fellow at both the Brookings Institution (1984-1993 and 1996-2001) and the Council on Foreign Relations (2002-2006). What kind of geo-strategy is Japan trying to adopt to survive such a difficult environment? While looking at the policies of the Kishida administration\, this session will analyze the future course of Japan. \nEmma Chanlett-Avery\, Specialist in Asian Affairs\, Congressional Research Service \n“The U.S.-Japan Alliance: the View from Washington” \nEmma Chanlett-Avery will present a perspective on the U.S.-Japan alliance from Washington\, D.C. How has the Biden Administration prioritized the U.S.-Japan alliance? How does the alliance fit within the recently-released Indo-Pacific strategy? Touching on both congressional and executive branch perspectives\, Ms. Chanlett-Avery will address the centrality of the U.S.-Japan alliance\, the growing network of other security partnerships such as the Quad\, and how Washington and Tokyo coordinate their approach to regional challenges. What are the areas of tension in the alliance? Will Japan’s upcoming release of its National Security Strategy align with U.S. policy? To what extent is Japan developing a more autonomous approach to its own defense? \nAbout the Speakers\nHiroyuki Akita is a Commentator of Nikkei. He regularly writes commentaries and columns\, analysis mainly on foreign & international security affairs. He joined Nikkei in 1987 and worked at Political News Dept.(98-2002) where he covered Japanese foreign & security policies\, domestic politics.
