SUMMARY:Toro Nagashi (Lantern Ceremony)
DESCRIPTION:Toro Nagashi (Lantern Ceremony) \nAugust 6th\, 7-10pm \nOsaka Garden (Garden of the Pheonix)\, Jackson Park\, 6300 S Cornell Ave\, Chicago\, IL 60637 \nThe Japanese Arts Foundation is proud to welcome you to our annual Toro Nagashi lantern ceremony\, in Jackson Park’s Osaka Garden. We hope to invite you to join us in this meaningful ceremony to process the loss of loved ones\, and to strengthen our bonds as a community. \nOnly 300 registrants will be allowed into the space and will recieve a lantern. Available lanterns are limited\, please register well in advance. You may decorate and craft your lantern into any design they wish on-site from 7:00-8:00pm with the community. \nThe ceremony of Toro Nagashi (literally\, “floating lanterns”) is a Buddhist tradition held to celebrate the end of Obon season. Toro Nagashi can be a smaller family affair to remember lost family members or a much bigger event to memorialize those who have been lost to natural disasters\, war\, and other causes. Toro Nagashi officially begins at the moment the ancestors commence their return to the spirit world. Communities come together to guide the spirits down to the water using traditional candle-lit lanterns (toro). The lanterns visually represent the spirits’ drifting home. \nLanterns will be floated in the waters of the Osaka Garden pond\, and can be placed throughout the Garden\, Yoko Ono’s SKYLANDING\, along with the sounds of shamisen courtesy of renowned musician Toyoaki Sanjuro of Asian Improv Arts Midwest will comfort guests throughout the evening. This year coincides with the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima\, Japan. To this day one of the largest Toro Nagashi ceremonies in Japan is held there to pay respect to the lives lost as a result of the bombing. \nEsteemed speakers include: \nLee Francis – First Vice-Chair\, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists\nMarion Mieko Friebus-Flaman\, Ph.D.- Executive Director of the Japan America Society of Chicago\nJapanese American Citizens League (JACL) Board Member (TBA)\nRepresentatives from the Chicago Park District\, Japanese Arts Foundation\, and Japanese Culture Center\n* Additional information will be emailed to attendees the week of the event. \nThis year’s ceremony is hosted by the Japanese Arts Foundation in partnership with the Chicago Park District\, Asian Improv Arts Midwest\, Japan America Society of Chicago\, and the Japanese Culture Center. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Book Club - Beast in the Shadows
DESCRIPTION:Our book club highlights voices and stories with a solid connection to Japan. For our next meeting\,  we chose “Beast in the Shadows” by Edogawa Rampo. A mystery writer turns detective to protect the woman he loves. But is he the hunter or the hunted?  The chance meeting between a crime novelist and a married woman blossoms into friendship. When she confides to him that she has been receiving threatening and sadistic letters from an ex-lover\, who says he is watching her in the shadows\, he knows he must help her. But the trail unexpectedly leads to another writer\, Oe Shundei\, the mysterious and secretive author of works of grotesque violence. Suddenly\, nothing is as it seems\, and nobody is safe. \nBe sure to pick up a copy of the book and join us for an evening of casual discussion in a virtual space via Zoom! Registrations are limited\, so grab a spot while you can! \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to info@jetaachicago.com. We look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Frank Lloyd Wright\, The Bradley House\, and Japan
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 8\, 2026 | 6:00 – 7:00 pm \nFree Members \n$5 Non-Members \nHow Japan helped Frank Lloyd Wright realize his vision of an American architectural style \nIn 1893 Frank Lloyd Wright saw Japanese architecture for the first time when he visited the Japanese pavilion at the World’s Columbian Exposition. The building had a major influence in his quest for a uniquely American architectural style. Seven years later Wright designed the B. Harley Bradley House in Kankakee\, his first Prairie House. \n“Wright in Kankakee” will soon be opening a Japan Influence Exhibit that tells the story of Wright’s interest in Japanese art and architecture and how it is manifested in Wright’s prairie houses\, and specifically the Bradley House. The exhibit was researched and curated by Amb. John Malott\, who will join us for a ZOOM presentation on Wednesday\, April 8 to tell the story of how Wright’s visit to the Japanese pavilion led to the world’s first prairie house in Kankakee\, Illinois. \nAmbassador John R. Malott \nAmbassador John Malott’s career in the United States Foreign Service and as a non-profit leader has focused on Asia and in particular\, Japan. During his 31-years in the US Department of State\, he served as Ambassador to Malaysia; Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs; Consul General in Osaka; Director of the Office of Japanese Affairs in Washington; Deputy Consul General in Mumbai; economic officer at the US Embassy in Tokyo; US Consul in Kobe; and civilian advisor to the US Army in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. During his diplomatic career he studied national security strategy at the National War College\, and the Japanese and Vietnamese languages at the Foreign Service Institute. \nAfter retirement from the State Department\, Amb. Malott served for twelve years as President of the Japan-America Society of Washington DC. \nIn 2017 the Emperor of Japan awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun with Gold Rays and Neck Ribbon for his lifelong contribution to US-Japan relations. In 2019 the Japan-America Society of Washington DC established the John and Hiroko Malott Leadership Award to recognize individuals and groups that are working to develop and mentor the next generation of leaders in the US-Japan relationship. \nHe is a Board Director of the Japan America Society of Chicago and an advisor to the Japan-America Society of Washington DC and the National Cherry Blossom Festival. \nHe was born in Kankakee\, raised in Manteno\, and is a graduate of Northwestern University. In 2024 he returned to his Illinois roots and now lives in Oak Park. \nRegister Here
