About the Event 

Come join members and friends for an introduction to Japan’s soul food – onigiri. Mr. Katsuyama will give a brief history of onigiri, discuss why onigiri is popular in Japan, give an update on the Japanese food scene in Chicago, and will tell the story behind the fairy tale Omusubi Kororin. Mr. Katsuyama will end his presentation with an account of lessons learned from starting his own business. During the virtual demo, attendees will get a live tutorial on how to make authentic onigiri at home.

 

About the Speaker

Mr. Yuta Katsuyama is a former management consultant in the food-tech industry in Japan. He moved to Chicago two years ago to pursue his MBA and a graduate degree in Design. Yuta loves onigiri and found himself homesick for the popular Japanese meal once he was in Chicago. Driven by his passion for food, he carried out user research and discovered that there was a potential market for onigiri among Japanese-food lovers in the United States. This summer, Yuta is launching KORORIN, a food start-up that will introduce various delicious flavors of onigiri to Chicago. Yuta dreams of making onigiri the next Japanese meal to hit the mainstream American market, following in the steps of sushi and ramen.
