DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nRecent work on Japanese history emphasizes new ways to analyze the economy that use energy expenditure as the basic unit of analysis rather than money\, which incorporates environmental thinking into it\, for example drawing our attention to entirely different domestic and international trade routes and infrastructure development. \nAbout the Speaker\nLaura Hein\, the Harold H. and Virginia Anderson Professor of History at Northwestern\, teaches and writes on twentieth-century Japan in its global context. Her most recent book\, Post-Fascist Japan: Political Culture in Kamakura after the Second World War (Bloomsbury\, 2018) focuses on the reparative social and cultural activities of Japanese who experienced the war years as fascist repression. Jinbun Shoin is bringing out a Japanese edition in mid-2023.
