About the Event
At this event, author and Chicago native Michael Howard will discuss his romp through four Japanese companies during his recent decade as an immigrant-turned-salaryman in Tokyo. His 2019 memoir, The Salaryman, was called “thoroughly entertaining” by The Japan Times, and his new The Salaryman manga series has been called “the best English manga available” by the Voices in Japan podcast. Attendees will hear the painfully funny and insightful truths Howard discovered about modern salaryman life—and all it reveals about the US–Japan culture gap. He will also discuss how he created his fun, illustrated book and comic about Tokyo middle-class life, his partnership with a professional Japanese manga artist, and how anyone can use Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform to self-publish a book.
About the Speaker
Howard hails from the north Chicago suburbs and was a journalist-turned-businessman in Los Angeles before he moved to Tokyo and joined the Japanese salaryman brotherhood in 2008. He recently returned to Chicago after spending 12 years in Tokyo, and continues to publish his manga series in both English and Japanese.
