About the Event

In honor of Showa Day “Showanohi” which is part of “Golden Week” in Japan where many festivals are held celebrating Spring, we will learn how to write a Neo-Traditional haiku worthy of an emperor. In this short hour we will discuss what is a haiku?, common misconceptions on haiku, opening your “Haiku Eye”, continuing your haiku exploration and writing and submitting your haiku.

About the Speaker

Before retiring so he could pursue different paths William Seiyo Sensei taught at Calumet College and Westwood College. There he taught Film & Literature, Sci-fi Literature, Film Production and various other classes.

Currently Sensei Seiyo is the leader of the Chicago Keikokai of Meifu Shinkage Ryu style of ShurikenJutsu at Japanese Culture Center – 日本文化会館, and lay Buddhist chaplain at the Jesse Brown VA Hospital. He is also the resident Haiku poet at the Japanese Culture Center and published poet and founder of Kumanoko foundation and runs the Midway GO Club

Seiyo Sensei is a religious scholar from Purdue Fort Wayne University, Buddhist Lay Chaplain at the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Hospital, Board member of Midwest Buddhist association, Lay Priest ordained by Bright Dawn, a Jodo Shinshu organization. Sensei is also involved with Midwest Buddhist Temple of Chicago.
